I had been wanting to check out Zaguan for the longest time considering it's been on Oak Lawn for so long, probably means it has decent grub. So, my boyfriend and I decide to refer to the Holy Grail (Entertainment coupon book) and utilize the buy one get one free coupon for our Sunday brunch meal. Some nice heavy wood, narrow wood doors open the way at the cafe. The atmosphere had a very bossa nova, sunny, casual vibe... which I LOVE. I love the yellow, sparkling blue tiles that decorated the walls. We decided to sit outside since it was quite packed inside. We took the longest time to decide what to eat... since we weren't Latin food experts, everything looked interesting and semi-tasty. I settled for the garlic, butter, salt Tilapia and Miggity got the Pabellon (with chicken). I've got to say, the fish was cooked perfect and the crust was the perfect crust. It was very flavourful, but a little too buttery for me. Regardless, it was a tasty meal. The rice was a good compliment. I need to remember to get the massive serving of raw vegetables that come with it. Miggity's dish was fairly good. I'm not a big fan of cooked plantains, but he loved them. The shredded chicken was floating in a tomato-based sauce, which was quite tasty. The black beans were delicious. For a buy one get one free, totally worth it. But I wouldn't have been too excited if I had to pay $12 for each dish. I was dying to get through the meal, only because I was dreaming of the bakery counter and all its inhabitants on the inside of the cafe. After what seemed like forever, we walked back in and I decided on the Charlotte Dulce (a layered cake) and the chocolate croissant. With coupon, the meal and desserts (tax and tip) came to about $22 bucks. We sat in the car and opened the brown bags to try the desserts. The croissant was AMAZING. I said it needed to be heated a bit. Then we dipped into the cake. Let me just say, it was out of this world! No kidding. It had crispy sliced almonds on top and there was a distinct flavour of almond and vanilla in the cake. It was kinda moist, kinda complicated, and completely delectable. Miggity was sweet enough to let me enjoy most of the cake because he said So, the food wasn't anything to rave about... it was average I'd say, flavourful but uncomplicated like most Latin food. The bakery, however, has a new patron.
