He ate some kheema since I had made since he hadn't eaten dinner. Then we went to go buy Leah's presents at Ross/Target. While at Ross he got quite thrilled by the abundance of wood cutting boards at thrifty prices. We were in a discussion about using the right knife and cutting board; of course this is all new information to me. I learned my tempered glass cutting board is rated "A" (Awful) for knives. We reached the checkout and he said, "I'm going to get you a wood cutting board." Of course my instant obvious uncomfortable response was, "No No you don't need to do that." And he responded, "Come on, let me get you the cutting board, it's only $10 bucks." I told him I was not good at receiving gifts and he said I should get used to it, besides, it would be good practice.
I gave in. And then my eyes started watering!! Over a cutting board!! LOL
Actually, they started watering over the gesture and thought that he really wanted to get me something that could be valuable to me and my new adventures in cooking.
So, here is my new 1" thick end grain cutting board...

Things you should know about wood cutting boards:
1. They are more resistant to bacteria than normal glass/plastic cutting boards
2. Proper "seasoning" of the board needs to be done prior to usage... douse it in vegetable oil on both sides and let it all soak in. Apply a few coats, allowing to completely soak in between each application. The oil makes it resistant to letting liquids from veggies sink in.
3. You can land up spending anywhere from $10 to $150+ on a good wood cutting board. Decide what you can afford and how thick you want it. The more expensive ones come as thick as 3"
4. It can be cleaned after use by wiping with a soft cloth, or sprayed with 4 parts water to 1 part 5% vinegar mixture, or soap and water. Though, you'll have to season again after that.
5. It will need seasoning regularly based on how often you use it.
